The Furniture Project

The Furniture Project Nottinghamshire is a registered charity that has been helping people across the county for more than thirty years. What began as a small community initiative in New Ollerton in the early nineties has grown into the largest furniture project in Nottinghamshire, supporting more than 34,000 families and individuals along the way.

    What They Do

The charity supplies subsidised furniture and essential household items to people facing poverty and hardship. They give donated goods a second life, keeping usable furniture out of landfill and helping to protect the environment. They also offer volunteering and work placements for people returning to paid employment, as well as for retirees and those in part-time work. The project works with Nottinghamshire Probation Service to provide community placements too.

    Who They Help

Support is available to those who meet the charity's eligibility criteria, with a particular focus on people in genuine crisis. That includes those who are homeless, on a low income, receiving benefits, or in temporary accommodation. They also help people affected by domestic violence, fire or flood damage, and those returning to the community after time in hospital, prison or other institutions.

    Making a Difference

Today the charity runs five vans across more than 600 square miles of Nottinghamshire, collecting donations and delivering furniture to those in need. Referrals come from over 400 agencies and organisations, with around ten requests for help handled each day. Their headquarters are at Boughton Industrial Estate in Newark, and they also run a retail shop in New Ollerton that helps fund their work. Their commitment to reusing household goods was recognised in 2016 when they received the Nottingham Evening Post Environmental Award for recycling and waste management.
